People read for enjoyment and interest, but in the US, fewer than half of adults said they read a book in 2022. Only 38% read fiction or short stories, down 17% over the past decade, and about 5% read more than 50 books a year. Reading is more common among people with higher education, better reading fluency, women, city residents, and those with higher income. Children become stronger readers when they know more about the world and see reading as enjoyable.
